Who's organizing?

Is this an EGLUG event?

How's it being marketed?

Who's volunteered?

Forget about it

As much as I'd like to help, but that's right in the middle of the exams. I think all university students will agree. (except maybe AAST).

i hope i can share

Excellent Timing!

looks like you carefully picked the date to make sure that no college students can be there :)

it is nice though that you found a place, can we get a weekly or half-monthly meetings there for free? i assume they have a computer lab with internet access and we can install gnu/linux there.

so sorry for not being able to be there...

It's pretty obvious that

MSameer's picture
  1. It's pretty obvious that the date s not suitable for many people.
  2. We'll have 2 events in 1 month with a few days as a separator ?
  3. Looks like the 2 organizers of the 2 events are not free.

I won't be in Egypt to follow the discussions. 4 hours for my flight.

It has come ot my attention in the last 5 minutes that this event is in support of AGEG, a political body with anti-globalization platform.

EGLUG is apolitical; this is not an event we should participate in for the sustainability of the movement and community. As such, it is my strong opinion that we should pull out.

Furthermore, who committed us ot this? It is a shameful action to commit EGLUG to a political event without getting the approval of the community.

EGLUG is supposed to

MSameer's picture

EGLUG is supposed to encourage people to take initiatives.

An there's nothing in the charter that is saying that we don't cooperate with political groups.

Correct me if I'm wrong!

Then why did we refuse to

phaeronix's picture

Then why did we refuse to deal with the "Society of future generation" before ( you know who ) , without even discussing it openly. They were just turned down. I sense double standards here.

What's that ? Please

Double standards

YoussefAssad's picture

I agree with phaeron here.

Regardless of how the message was conveyed, EGLUG's response to the FGF approach was one of rejection. This response was indicated if not said explicitly by members of EGLUG whom whether we or they like it or not have come to represent more than just members.

EGLUG should reject any and all political involvement. At the moment, the situation and the facts are that since some senior members are politically committed to political stances they will act on their preferences within the charter. The fact also is that this eventually colors the LUG, regardless of whether it is in the charter.

Keep your politics out of here. Don't hide behind the charter; just because the charter says no politics and because you pay lip service to it doesn't mean that you aren't committing the LUG to a political inclination anyhow.

Again, keep your politics OUT.

1) there must be a clear

linuxawy's picture

1) there must be a clear trend to deal with political and relegious groups, we are not a political/relegious group but we can cooperate with them. here in alex we cooperated with life_makers_alex, which is a muslim group. and i don't mind of cooperating with a churche also. but we must have rules for such things and it should be added to the charter.

2) i know about what phaeron means with double standards, but AFAIK he told them to post in the site to get the community openion, and told them that personally he won't cooperate with them which is completely his right, but he didn't say to eglug that it's not acceptable to cooperate with them, nor told them that eglug refuses to cooperate.

3) whirlpool should've discussed this event and made a poll for it before he publish it as an eglug event. most of people here (including me) didn't hear about AGEG before.

4) if it was accepted in eglug to cooperate with political groups, any event like this should state clearly that it's about a political group, so any member can accept or refuse.

My 2 piastres

YoussefAssad's picture

1. It has always been my opinion that EGLUG should avoid any and all political involvement whether by supporting, participating, or anything else. This is for the safety of the community, out of paranoia.

2. When FGF approached, it was a pretty clear message to fsck off from the people who are regarded as the movers and shakers of the group. Even if they subsequently told the FGF that the community was ultimately the arbiter, the response from people perceived as the primary movers is sufficient to ensure that this amounts to a de facto no. AGEG, on the other hand, managed to get the approval of one of the primary people in the LUG, whirlpool, who did not even consider consulting us. This is unequivocally double standards. This is exactly why I stepped down from adminship and now enjoy a lower profile.

3. Agree entirely.

4. Agree entirely again.

AFAIK FGF was turned down

BooDy's picture

But it doesn't make any difference whether they were turned down or not the problem here is that some of us as YoussefAssad said are committed to political stances and this shouldn't affect eglug and shouldn't relate eglug to any political stances. Personally I don't think I hated anybody more than NDP members or people supporting our royal family but that shouldn't have any thing to do with eglug. The point is its good to take initiatives but joining certain events like this one will stamp eglug with a certain political stance which we can't and don't want to afford whether its in the charter or not

Death is only the beginning...

i'm free.. but

linuxawy's picture

the timing is so bad.. most of us in alex are students (except only 3 AFAIK).. i'm free and ready to participate but it will be really bad to do it in that timing...

Ahmed D. El-Mekkawy

I am interested too BUT..

phaeronix's picture

the BUTs:

1- If the date is not acceptable then change it.

2- Where is the wiki page describing this proposed event, so we can start discussing preparation and resources.

3- Please clearly state if there IS really any political affiliation , and if this is really in violation of our policy.

the timing

whirlpool's picture

The date is fixed it can't be changed. As for AGEG you better check their website.

Second thing we have several problems.

  1. Time is not suitable for many members, due to exams.
  2. There are only 3 PCs at their lab.
  3. The political affiliation of AGEG. This is a fundemntal EGLUG issue that was under debate earlier.
  4. I didn't announce this earlier. This is largly my fault.

Actually we did debate the same issue before. Hence, I think we should start thinking about a community decission. If it is appropriate to take part in events by political groups.

Mostafa Hussein

about the timing, as we

linuxawy's picture

about the timing, as we don't have a choice about it then if we're gonna participate then we should do it. about the political agenda, as for myself i don't see it a problem as we're not gonna discuss any political issues and as they are not illegal entity... but may be we should participate as individuals if there's a problem with our charter, but i don't recommend leaving such activity.

what about making a poll about it?
