Free and Open Source Software in Sudan: Freedom of Change and Strategic Vision
Submitted by linuxawy on Tue, 16/06/2009 - 12:51pm.
About the event
EGLUG was contacted by Nile Center for Technology Research (NCTR) to be a speaker in this conference. NCTR is a governmental institute in Sudan.
The event is governemtnat, with more than one minister attending along with other decision makers (the list of participants is available). It was mainly held to make a tough change for all the governmental institutes there to turn from using proprietary software to be completely relaying on FOSS.
The event site is http://www.itrc.sd/foss
The reason for this change is strategic, needing the freedom from software suppliers monopoly, they started to search for alternatives and FOSS was their best alternative.
What eglug was there to do
There were 2 non-Sudanese entities as speakers in this event:
- Malaysia Administrative Modernisation and Management Planning Unit (MAMPU): a Malaysian governmental institute, They were speaking about the Malaysian master plan to turn all governmental institutes to FOSS gradually.
- EGLUG: we were speaking about how to create/organize/grow a community
