this is not what you're talking about is it?

DjVu is a web-centric format and software platform for distributing documents and images. DjVu content downloads faster, displays and renders faster, looks nicer on a screen, and consume less client resources than competing formats. DjVu was originally developed at AT&T Labs-Research by Leon Bottou, Yann LeCun, Patrick Haffner, and many others. In March 2000, AT&T sold DjVu to LizardTech Inc. who now distributes Windows/Mac plug-ins, and commercial encoders (mostly on Windows)

don't tell me we have another firebird name conflict fiasco at hand.

cheers,

Well, it is actually something like pdf but cooler and much better in case of scanned ebooks, OCRed ebooks, comics and newspaper. And things are rendered much faster. There are 132 egyptian children books published by the bibalex in DjVu format. Intrestingly some of the books were published in 1998 !! DjVu is a free --as in freedom-- format. Urpmi can install it for you as usuall.
